My addiction to television series’, be it cartoons or real live humans, started with Meteor Garden and my aunt’s DVD copy of the series. TV series, reduces life matters into the simplest things, and as I am constantly being thrown in the middle of complex issues of life and such, I welcome the addiction with arms wide open. I don’t watch tagalog tv series. Sorry for being “unpatrionistic” but I’m surrounded by Filipinos everyday seeing them in television when I want to rest is just a bit too much. Besides, most series from this country are Drama, if I want to cry I would only need to contemplate the direction of my life.
Anyway, I’ve noticed that lately there’ve been a number of series’ (cartoons and live humans) with girls pretending to be boys. One is Korea’s “Coffee Prince” where a girl, Go Eun Chan (Yoon Eun Hye), pretended to be a boy to get a job and ended up seducing and falling in love with her boss, Choi Han Kyul (Gong Yoo who is currently serving his two year mandatory military service).

The “girl getting away with pretending to be a boy” concept was a hit in Korea and also here in the Phils which is probably the reason why there’s another one of them being aired on Primetime TV: “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e” of Japan and “Hana Kimi” of Taiwan (sorry, not sure whether the Taiwanese title really is “Hana Kimi”).

I haven’t watched the Taiwanese version but I was hooked on “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e,” which is based on a Manga called Hana Kimi, mainly because the guy playing Nakatsu Shuichi (Ikuta Toma) is cute. Horikita Maki plays the lead Ashiya Mizuki, a girl who went to an all boys school just to see her crush Sano Izumi played by Oguri Shun. Ikuta Toma plays the Nakatsu Shuichi, the dude who also fell for Ashiya even though he knew she was a boy. If you’ve watched Hanayori Dango Season 2 (Episode 1), you’ll remember him playing Oribe Junpei, the guy who used Makino Tsukushi to get to Doumyouji Tsukasa. The series is slightly different from the Manga but it was ‘cute’ as well.

What is it with these stories with girls pretending to be boys? Does this have anything to do with the number of gay people coming out of the closet? I mean, technically, these boys who fall in love with the girl who is only “pretending” to be a boy is gay right?. But then again, maybe it’s can serve us more than just entertainment. Years ago, if shows like these turned up it probably wouldn’t be this much of a hit but now that people are finally accepting gays… maybe it’ll help more people adjust to the fact that gays are a part of our society too.

Anyway, as long as they’re making show like this here’s another one with a girl pretending to be a boy: the cartoon series Ouran Academy by Bisco Hatori. Haruhi Fujioka was mistaken for a boy when she entered the school’s “Host Club.” She accidentally knocks over an 8 million yen worth vase and was immediately put to work as their ‘errand boy’ by the Host club president or “King,” Tamaki (sorry, I forgot his full name). When Tamaki found out that Haruhi actually looked good under her messy hair, he promotes her to host. Her real gender was eventually found out by the whole club but because of her debt, she stayed as a host and hid her gender from the customers and the rest of the school. I bet this one will be a hit too. Producers, what do you say?
